This thread inspired me when it first came out to do a few things to spruce up my desktop. I never even used to set wallpaper on my desktops in the past. I took the generic desktop, moved a few programs around for convenient access and moved on.

I still spend almost no time on making my desktop look good. But even *I* was inspired to make Fluxbox look really slick after seeing this thread. I borrowed a few ideas here. This is truly the best thread I have found for great desktop ideas. That alone makes it one of the best threads that's just for the hell of it.

I spend all day on my system working my butt off. So I've carved out a little fun by making my desktop look good with a few ideas here. Makes my day that much better.

XMonad, Stalonetray (which, unlike Trayer, works properly when you use xrandr to rotate), a transparent xmobar, and Solarized themes for X terminals (rxvt-unicode and XTerm, at least), vim, ls, mc and Eclipse.

Best thing is BFS, but there's a lot of memory management tweaks...
Ex: It's improved X performance (I think it's because of BFS) you really can feel the change especially if you have slow pc.

I have been eying all the amazing minimalist desktops you show off for a while now and it's finally got me in the mood for trying out something more complex. I've never messed about with customizing the look of linux much, generally sticking with a base KDE or Gnome GUI (which is strange considering how much I modify my Windows environments). Any tips and program recommendations you could give? Whatever window manager you are using looks absolutely amazing.

Following this thread from the beginning will give you more than enough information to get you started. I think the best minimalist desktops use Fluxbox. It takes a little learning because the menus are edited by text files. Also Fluxbox is strictly a Window Manager as opposed to XFCE or KDE which are desktop environments. If you expect a desktop environment, go with XFCE or KDE.

There are examples of all these environments on this thread that look great. Choose which is best for your needs and have fun with it.

I had a feeling it was either Fluxbox or Openbox. I'm quite familiar with editing shells that require similar things. I actually use LiteStep on my Windows machine, so I'll probably feel right at home (and I imagine there will be far less bugs running it on Linux compared to Windows).

I use fluxbox personally. Openbox is allright, and I used it for quite some time, but after learning it, I just prefer fluxbox. Config files may seem intimidating at first, but they make it a lot easier to customize. And yes, it is simply a window manager, not a DE. That means youll have to pick programs for everything from setting the wallpaper (i suggest nitrogen) to managing files (thunar) and even terminals (rxvt-unicode). Thats a lot of the fun in moving to a window manager, you discover all kinds of great apps that you otherwise would not have heard of.
